The FNG

The Foundation was created in 1967 by the public authorities and the main basic or supplementary social security systems in France
National research centres working in the field of health contributed to its creation.
The FNG was recognized to be of public interest on 21 September 1967.

 
   ACTIVITIES
   
  INFORMATION SERVICE

The FNG maintains a library and an information centre (both written and audio-visual) which is the main one in France. It is open to the public and holds about 15 000 items.
It also maintains an audio-visual department.

  PUBLICATIONS
 
It has a quarterly journal Gérontologie et Société that was founded in 1975: more than 100 issues have been published on various subjects concerning all aspects of ageing
Its also publishes acts and results of seminars and workshops.

  HUMAN RIGHTS
 
Since 1985, management of a permanent committee on "the rights and freedom of the elderly" in collaboration with l'Association Francophone des droits de l'homme âgé and with a national association ALMA (Allo Maltraitance).
Edition of a charter for the rights of frail and old people.

  INTERGENERATIONAL PROJECTS
 
Program "Growing is ageing, ageing is growing" (since 1993).
Creation of a literary prize for the youth on the issues concerning age cycles and intergeneration (in French-speaking countries).

  ADVANCING HEALTH AND WELL-BEING INTO OLD AGE
 
Program of cognitive stimulation (started in 1990)
Evaluation of life quality in institutions for the elderly (started in 1987)
Coordination of the European study "SYST-EUR High Blood Pressure in the elderly" for France and coordination of the "SYST-EUR Vascular Dementia Project" for Europe (1988-2001)

  RESEARCH
 
It leads fundamental or applied research in biomedical, epidemiological, sociodemographic, psychological or social fields.
It is compiling a directory of French research workers and current studies in the field of gerontology.

  TRAINING OF HEALTH PROVIDERS
 
It proposes different practical and methodological training.
Implementation (in France) of the Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI) within RAI France network (since 1997).
Training for AGGIR. This scale, recommended by French authorities, measures old age dependency.

  INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES
 
Involvement in the networks created by Eurolink Age and by the European association AGE since 2001.
Collaboration with the International Longevity Center (ILC) since 1989.
Thanks to these activities, the FNG promotes the rights of elderly people and modifies the image of aging.
